Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills

THE IDEA
Youth Leadership Vestavia Hills (YLVH), a program for Vestavia Hills High School students that evolved from a 2005 LVH class project, provides an opportunity for teens to discover, develop and utilize their leadership skills in a unique way. The mission of the program is to train students to become leaders and change agents who will help break down barriers of stereotyping and prejudice. The YLVH vision statement reads Be the Difference. Our belief is that this program will raise up our next generation of leaders who will truly make a difference.

THE PROGRAM
The YLVH program is two-pronged: the first consists of professional diversity training by the National Council on Community Justice (NCCJ) for sophomores. The second is more intensive training and service during their junior and senior years for those who have completed the diversity training. Due to the immediate success and potential impact of this program, the high school administration has incorporated YLVH into its course curriculum. For the second year, the course is offered to those students who have completed the NCCJ training during their sophomore year. The goal is to train as many sophomores as possible so that they may have the opportunity to continue the program in a more intensified way by taking the class as a junior and/or senior. At any given time there are approximately 300 students in the program.

THE RESULTS
One of the most powerful results of the initial training is what we call Heritage Panels. Panels of five trained students share personal stories with middle schoolers – stories of bullying, stereotyping, or injustices. Whether the speaker was the bully, the victim, or the witness, each and every story is meaningful to the listeners, those who share similar experiences. This program empowers those who feel powerless and instills hope in those who struggle with social difficulties that often accompany the age. To witness a Heritage Panel in action is to witness positive transformations.

Other results include service projects such as the Sadie Hawkins Dance to benefit cancer research, Relay for Life teams, extended community service projects, and new student driven activities.

YLVH is addressing issues our young adults face daily. VHHS Principal Cas McWaters said it best when commenting on the impact of YLVH, “I see this as an important vehicle in making a big school feel small. It will help us create a family feeling at VHHS, a place where every single student is important, accepted, and belongs.”

On a personal note, we thank each of you who has contributed to the success of YLVH. Through your generous financial support and selfless investment of time, this project has transformed into a passion with limitless potential. What a privilege it is to watch our next generation of leaders find their wings. Thank you for dreaming BIG with us"
